ANTIOXIDANTS:

Essential elements of healthy skin

Daily living produces conditions of environmentally challenged skin. Sun exposure, environmental pollution, cigarette smoke, solvents and pesticides, or even prooxidative skin treatments all wreak daily havoc on the skin at the cellular level. This process, called oxidation or free radical formation, destroys collagen, breaking down cell walls and impairing normal cell function. Damage is instant, often irreversible, and continuous which is why it is critical to stabilize or neutralize these free radicals.

The topical application of antioxidants supports physiological mechanisms to maintain or restore a healthy skin barrier and prevent damage caused by free radicals to DNA and other cellular molecules. Antioxidants are substances that slow the skin’s natural oxidation process by neutralizing free radicals. Recent clinical studies show that in addition, antioxidants may reduce abnormal cell growth and inflammation, help the body eliminate cancer-causing agents, and restore communication between different cells within the body. Furthermore, sun-screening agents also benefit from combination with antioxidants resulting in increased safety and efficacy of such photo protective products.

Effective Antioxidants:
Vitamin A

Vitamin A and its derivatives have 2 main functions: they act as antioxidants, and they activate specific genes and proteins. As antioxidants, they protect cells from oxidative damage by 3 different mechanisms: (1) scavenging peroxyl radicals, (2) quenching singlet oxygen, and (3) triplet-state sensitizers. Vitamin A and its derivatives inhibit lipid peroxidation; increase levels of Alpha-Tocopherol (Vitamin E); and activate growth factors, oncogenes, keratins, and transglutaminases.

Forms: Retinyl Palmitate, Retinyl Acetate, Beta Carotene (Provitamin A). Also found in Almond Oil, and Shea Butter

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps heal wounds and scar tissue, and builds resistance to infection. It is required for the synthesis of collagen, the intercellular cement that holds tissues together. It is also one of the major antioxidant nutrients. It prevents the conversion of nitrates into cancer-causing substances. Moreover, Vitamin C has been shown to help slow the production of hyperpigmentation while providing some UV protection.

Forms: Ascorbic Acid (L-Ascorbic Acid), Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate

Vitamin E

An antioxidant able to ’catch’ free radicals at cell membranes, it increases the reduction of UVA-induced oxidative stress; impedes the gene expression of the collagenase by an inhibition of the proteinkinase C activity; and able to protect from a ROS-related inhibition of the collagen biosynthesis. Also found in products containing Shea Butter and Coconut Oil.

Forms: Tocopherol, Tocopherol Acetate

Coenzymes

These include both Alpha Lipoic Acid and CoQ10. Alpha Lipoic Acid is an antioxidant that is both water and fat-soluble allowing it to go into many areas of a cell. Endogenous (naturally present in the body), it has the ability to recycle several other important antioxidants including Vitamins C and E. CoQ10 not only neutralizes harmful free radicals, but is one of the essential cogs in the biochemical machinery that produces cellular energy (ATP).

Flavonoids

These phytochemicals increase blood circulation at the sub-epidermal level; improve intra-cellular membrane exchanges of micronutrients and the overall texture and appearance of the skin; control oxidative stress and peroxidation of membrane lipids; and are powerful enzyme modulators. Includes Rutin (found in apples, blueberries), Quercetin (found in apples, blueberries), Hesperidin and Diosmin (found in lemons and oranges).

Polyphenols

Green Tea extract (catechins and epigallocatechin gallate-EGCG) the most powerful of this category of flavonoid antioxidants, also possess anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties. Studies have demonstrated that Green Tea prevents ultraviolet-induced damage that leads to immune suppression and skin cancer induction. Research also indicates that Green Tea prevents the DNA skin damage, inflammation, and immune suppression that result from UVB exposure. Additional powerful polyphenols include Rosmarinic acid (Rosemary), Hypericin (St. John’s Wort), Ellagic acid (Pomegranate fruit), Chlorogenic acid (Blueberry leaf), Oleuropein (Olive leaf).
